Like last year, Another Planet Entertainment plans to displace San Franciscans and visitors from Golden Gate Park. For about two weeks San Franciscans and visitors are getting kicked out of huge portion of GGP by a private entity so that it can make a profit. Chunks of time and space like this are going to add up quickly. Say good bye to Speedway Meadows and hello to the Walmart greeter ....

When
21 AUG -- 3 SEPT 2009 (and in 2010--2013)
Whom
All unauthorized users

How
Chain--link fencing

What to Do
Spread the word about our loss of access to GGP, the displacement of fauna, and the destruction of flora by letter, word of mouth, phone, email, text, etc.

Harassed, insulted and spit upon. SF Critical mass: 7/25/08

Hi folks,
I'm an avid cyclist and fan of getting more cars off the street. However, due to my job as a musician, I sometimes have to haul a lot of gear across town on friday evenings. This evening I was heading home from a much earlier set than usual, and found myself, happily, being overtaken by the horde of critical mass.
My mood soured when I was cussed at, called names, had my vehicle slapped and spit upon. I even said, in a very reasonable tone, "I'm a cyclist, I'm with YOU guys" and was only insulted for driving a car.

I hadn't participated in a critical mass in a long time, and thanks to this display, I will certainly never again. It seems what used to be a peaceful form of protest has turned in to a "Us vs. Them" mentality amongst SF cyclists. I'm not an asshole for driving. And I'm CERTAINLY a respectful auto driver towards fellow cyclists. It seems when the hive mind is active and you're safe in numbers, it's totally reasonable to react in complete revulsion to auto drivers.

Please, have more respect. People who drive cars (or by happenstance, finds themselves in the midst of critical mass), should be treated this way. It certainly makes the pro-bike argument look more extreme and potentially dangerous.

We're looking for a sound system and rider for our bicycle contingent in the Pride parade on Sunday, 6/29. We have a cool playlist of bicycle music, and all we need is the gear to amplify it to the throngs.

UC Davis student wants to hear your take on CM SF!

Hi All,

First let me express my respect and admiration for all you Massers out there who battle auto hegemony. I'm a grad student at UC Davis, and my thesis topic is how race and class issues tie into movements for more pedestrian-friendly communities. I'm a walker but also a biker (I love Davis!!!!), and I'm writing a paper looking at several anti-car/public space-reclaiming movements or entities (Critical Mass, Healthy Saturdays, REBAR PARK(ing) Day, and City Carshare). I want to examine the implications of Critical Mass SF and these other efforts for democratizing the public sphere and challenging our unconscious, "programmed" spatial practices.

What I'd love to hear from you about are your thoughts on whether CM SF represents a broad demographic of the city (or is it dominated by one group or subpopulation?). Are there people of all colors and backgrounds and income levels involved? How do you think the rest of city culture perceives the movement? Do you think CM is becoming a little more accepted in SF, by the City, the police, other institutions? What's your personal reason or goal for participating? Do you think CM has challenged people's ideas about the public sphere, and how?

Anyone who's willing to lend me their thoughts will receive a BIG blessing over the computer wires.

Thanks!

Ellen

Buy Nothing Day Bike Ride through Bay Street [Emeryville] This Friday!

We are having a special Critical Mass this Friday, November 23rd. There is no other Critical Mass scheduled for that day because there are five Fridays in November. It's the day after Thanksgiving!!!!!!

Hey, come celebrate Buy Nothing Day on your bike! We'll target Bay St/Shellmound in Emeryville where thousands of bargain hunters will gather to buy their wives sexy lingerie and their parents gift certificates at a disgusting shopping center built on an Ohlone burial ground. At least they named it Shellmound in honor of that. Ahhh!

Meet us at FOUR O'CLOCK PM [4PM! 4:00PM!] at the MacArthur BART station and we'll leave shortly after that. Please tell all of your friends! Please build or borrow a bike if you don't have one! Bring signs and snacks and anything else ever.

Hooray!

Seriously, come to this thing. It will be great!

4PM, NOV. 23, MacArthur BART!

Hello. In June of 2007, I was riding in Oakland Critical Mass with the soundsystem trailer that many of you might have seen at cm rides, renegade parties and protests. An OPD cop blocked my path and pulled me off my bike without any warning and put me in the back of a cop car and proceeded to write me a ticket because apparently he didn't approve of bicyclists celebrating alternative transportation and raising awareness on issues like global warming while having a lot of fun. I think he was just jealous. Anyway, I ended up fighting the ticket and the judge threw me the book on my recent court date on Oct 15th. She was obviously biased based on her statement, "I've been hearing about you Critical Mass people and all the trouble you're causing." She made me pay a fine of $200. If you'd like to support the soundsystem by helping defray the cost of the ticket, please make a paypal donation to the following email address: bikesoundsystem [at] gmail.com
You can make the donation here:
http://spaz.org/criticalmassdonate.html

Thanks and see you at the ride!

just trying to get some tips before jumping into this.

im mechanically handy and can take apart the bike completely to it's frame in no time flat. Does anyone have any tips regaurding sanding menthods for removing rust, good places to tape off before spraying..things like that

I've painted 2 cars before but seeing as how the bike doesn't have any flat surfaces the sanding technique for cars wont apply here.

I moved to north bay this month. Read about the mass in the paper. Moved here with nothing more than my bike. I couldn't be more happy to find such an event. Tomorrow is Friday, the last one of the month. I'm look for a veteran masser to PM me so I can confirm what little information I have gathered. Thanks, ride on!

Official Guide to Critically Single!

Hello all, and welcome to the final draft of the "Critically Single" event info as it will be seen in the "What, Where, When."

The guide and rules are posted below the What, Where, When entry.

Critically Single : Speed Dating On Wheels! Detail
Description: Nothing is sadder than a tandem bicycle with one rider or a solitary bike crossing the playa. Join our Critical Mass inspired, speed dating/ art tour starting from Snowflake Village (the speed dating experts!) Get to know each other as we ride between installations, enjoy them together, switch partners, and ride to the next. If we have any stragglers after the event, we will bar crawl, on bikes, in mass, until you are no longer single, or until I pass out drunk and crash!
Date: Wednesday, August 29, 2007
Time: 6:00pm-8:00pm
Duration: 120 minutes
Category:	Parades
Eco/Green Event?:	Yes
Hosted by/Camp Name:	Snowflake Village

Here is the scoop on how Critically Single will be run:

* As fast as people come in on their bikes, you will be assembled into teams of 8, four M and four F.
* You will then be sent out to tour 3 nearby Playa art installations
* You will talk to a different person on each leg of the journey
* You will impress each other with your enlightened perspective on the art pieces (you lucky people on the way back will get to talk about your favorites, instead!)
* By the time you get back 20 minutes later, each F has chatted up each M and vice versa.

*** Then you play the game! ***
Secret voting on a gameboard; the Red Pin of Passion for the one you are super hot for, and the White Pin of " sure... I'd date them". You can play both pins, one pin, or no pins.

We match people who choose each other. Winners get a prize packet and a blessing from the Snowflake Scepter on their union, whether it lasts a minute, a month, or a lifetime.

If you do not succeed the first time, try again! If you do not succeed during the speed dating, we'll launch, in mass, to find alcohol, mixing and mingling all the way. Remember, everyone riding with us is looking! So don't be shy! You are around kindred spirits who are just as crazy as you! ;-)

We may need volunteers to help for an hour each (two half hour shifts.) Volunteer benefits are:
* Exposure to the opposite gender. You will be helping the opposite gender, which will assure that you get seen by EVERY hopeful.
* After your half hour shift, you will get front of line treatment!
* You will get "I helped Critically Single" swag, thus increasing your hotness by an order of magnitude.
* If you do not get hooked, during the Critically Single Bar Crawl, we WILL pimp you.

See you on the playa!

any ideas on bike rentals for this fridays critical mass?

Heya pedal pushers!

Im organizing a birthday ride on Friday and a bunch of us dont have bikes that are useable beyond the playa. We are looking for a place to rent about 6 or 7 bikes just for the ride and then be able to return them that night. We are running into the problem of rental shops closing down at 6 so therefore we would have to drive our bikes back home in cars to our homes that are far away defeating the whole purpose. Perhaps someone out there has a bunch of bikes laying around and wants to make a bit of money this friday??? lets make a deal!

Critically Single! - Burning Man 2007!

Does this look familiar?

http://idiotcomics.com/saddestday.gif

Have a bike for two (or more) but no one with which to share it?

Well, I'll be at Burning Man trying to change that! This year at the man, I am promoting an event called "Critically Single"; Critical Mass meets speed dating!

Bring a tandem, bring a friend! (preferably to match your persuasion to TRY and keep things balanced.) We'll pool all our mass together and using a very scientific process (still under works in our "Critically Single" testing facility) we will pair people up for short dates! As people find pairings, just like critical mass, we will dwindle down to a critical few. When we get sufficiently small, we'll go find bars on the Playa and get critically drunk, and be each other's wingpersons as we try and get our last remaining massers hooked up.

Join the tribe and lets talk details.
http://tribes.tribe.net/criticallysingle

Interested parties who can help contribute, please join! I need some help brainstorming the idea and I definitely don't want to horde this idea for myself.

I understand why we didn't go up to the Bay Bridge this time. Its becasue too many people didn't think we could do it. Too bad since it was the 14th year aniversery. Somebody said afterwards "that is something that will happen like on the 20th aniversery"

Lets stop makeing up excuses and DO IT! We should try next time and make a statement that would surely be heard. Isn't the point of Mass to stop traffic? Why should we be limited to the streets? If ALL of us go, do you really think they can stop us?

Next time I plan on makeing more of an effort to get people to acomplish this feat. We took the transbay terminal, We can take the bridge.

Just a thought.

Nice enjoyable Mass yesterday, until I was about half way through the Broadway tunnel.
Who the fuck was it?
M100 or whatever the fuck,
BOMBS AREN’T COOL!
Way to kill the party! After that people were so weirded out and confused the Mass just kind of ended.
A little harmless firecracker I know, but that sounded like a fuckin bomb to me.
Not to mention the nice police swarm that quickly followed.
BOO TO YOU!
People just kind of dumbly looked at each other for someone to lead on.
How does planning out the route beforehand go again?
What is the message we're trying to spread here?
I went home.

Riding from the Sunset to Fort Mason

hi! Sorry for the non-CM topic, but this seems to be the most active SF Bike tribe.

I live near Sunset and Lincoln, and I have a brand spanking new job at upper Fort Mason (right by Bay and Franklin). I have an 8 speed cruiser, and I'm in crappy shape.

I loved riding to my old job at Church and Market. I could always beat the N-Judah, and usually beat the 16ax. Fort Mason seems like it'll be a challenge though, and I was wondering if anyone had any route hints. I was lucky enough to get a guided tour of the wiggle the first time I rode to work at the last job.

Currently I'm thinking of getting into the park, and riding up Arguello into the Presidio. I'd probably have to walk that hill for a while. Then ride down the big hill, and once I'm in the Marina, it's flat - mostly - until upper Fort Mason. On the way home I was thinking of winding over to downtown, and just taking the same route home I did from the old job. I'm not sure how long it would take to bike this... it's a 50 minute Muni ride according to 511.

In theory, I could also bike to Van Ness and Market and take the 47/49. I've never put my bike on a bus. I'm not even sure it would fit... it's a long bike. I'd probably test that on a non-work day.

I'd really rather bike than Muni because I need the exercise, and because it's fun! So any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Was more than a little disgusted by the ride last Friday. Whose bright idea was it to ride over the sidewalk at the Powell St. cable car turnaround, and then proceed up into the quagmire of pedestrian mass around Union Square?

I do not care for crowds, and having to walk my bike through the teeming mob of consumers in the fashion district is profoundly uninteresting, imho. I took my ride elsewhere...fast.

Save the Critical Mass bike soundsystem!

Help save the SF Bay Area Critical Mass bike soundsystem by donating to cover the costs of fighting the two remaining court cases.

Donate to the Bike Soundsystem Legal Fund at:
http://www.passionbomb.com/bike

I'm currently facing two court cases in San Francisco for the being ticketed while riding the bike soundsystem. Both cases share the same charge of California Vehicle Code section 27007 (which has to do with vehicles with amplified sound). The first ticket was received when I was pulled over by the CHP at the May 2005 SF Critical Mass. The second ticket was from the September 2005 SF Critical Mass ride when I was pulled over by the SFPD. In July 2005, I was also arrested while riding the bike soundsystem at the G8 protest in San Francisco. My bike, soundsystem trailer and iPod were all confiscated and it took about a month and a half to get them out (on the day of the August 2005 SF Critical Mass). The charge from the G8 protest was eventually dismissed, but only because the arresting cop was too stupid to write a valid ticket.

In California Vehicle Code section 27007, it states that "this section does not apply to the sound systems of vehicles used for advertising, or in parades, political or other special events". The California Vehicle Code also defines "vehicles" narrowly to not include human-powered vehicles. Some of the sections regarding traffic laws do apply to bicycles but those sections that do apply to bicycles are specifically listed and 27007 is not one of them.

I will be appearing in court today(10/28) for the ticket from last month's ride. My next trial is set for November 10th, 2005 for the first ticket from May 2005. The amount of fine for each case if I lose will be $154.96, so I'm facing about $310 in total fines, so far. I was able to get some donations at the end of the October ride at the screening of the NYC CM documentary, "Still We Ride". Any amount you can give will help. Thanks!

SUPREME effort to CRUSH a TRINKET of MEANING (say, a BIRTHDAY CAKE or a thought provoking EFFIGY) under a FALLING 2 TON BANK SAFE!

as always, i'm quite excited for next week's ride. the summer rides are always so glorious!

So... I have been going to both berkeley and SF rides for over two years now with an attendance rate of ~90%. When I first started going, I had no friends nor acquaintances. While I don't have many friends in general, almost all of the people I know are through CM, and it's been quite fun picking up new associations cumulatively over the months... However, it's a slow process. I smile at everyone, often engage in small talk. But sometimes it's a challenge to make a connection (you know that odd part in the conversation, once you've already gotten past "I'm so happy to be here!" "I know! I love this!!")... While someone recently encouraged me to get the guts to make non-daterape pickup lines (you know, like, "what's your favorite book?"...), I'm still too bashful to actively badger people into friendliness in person. But online is a whole other story (we can hide behind a mask of pixels and unreal-time communication delay)...

So, I'm badgering you. Let's have some sort of meet and greet at Peewee Herman Plaza beforehand! I honestly almost always sit and eat my nut butter sandwich by myself the whole time.

Cheers!

I'm thinking of taking a little bicycle trip up north of Napa and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get across the water north of Richmond, CA? I mean, do either of the interstate bridges allow for bicycles? Is there an obvious transit route?

will you teach me to change a flat tire?

I ran over a thumbtack and deflated one of my bike tires. I'd like to learn how to fix it rather than getting someone else to do it for me. Or I could probably follow instructions online if someone could point me in the right direction.
Thanks!

Thank you for posting new pics after each SF critical mass. Even if it's only a shot or two, I soo much appreciate the visuals!

I left San Francisco about 5 years ago and moved to the east coast (DC). One of the things I miss the most are the monthly critical masses in SF. The pics occasionaly posted here allow me to relive those happy moments. It's wonderful to see the smiling faces of all you beautiful bicycle people! Thank you soo much!!!
Crit mass small poster

A few years back there was a small (maybe 11 X 5) poster style flyer with a woman with wings and a bike that said some thing like " 10 years critical mass" and then something about the SF date on the bottom. Some one was handing those little guys out at the SF masses. I used to have one and it got lost in the move.

Does anyone have one of that poster that I could buy/trade/ get from you? I want to have it framed so it needs to be in half decent condition. If there is anyone out there with an extra copy, or know where I can get one let me know.
thanks,
paul

!hola! there is an

ANTI-CAPITALIST MARCH AGAINST G8 & EMPIRE
07/08/05

so here is some event info leading up to the march.
it would rock if some bike peoples (including myself) could come to a meeting so we could organize a plan of action

07.03.05---- 1:00pm
NEW COLLEGE in the mission on Valencia

07.06.05----6:00pm
INFORMATIONAL FORUM/ FILM SCREENING & food
-The Kitchen- 225 Portrero Ave. @ 16th St. -SF

07.07.05----7:00pm
SPOKESCOUNCIL
-Village Market- 18th St. & Florida- SF

07.08.05----8:00pm
ANTI-CAPITALIST MARCH AGAINST G8 & EMPIRE
-16th St. & Mission Bart Plaza- SF

it would be good to organize something for lovers of the bicycle.
THIS WOULD REALLY ADD MOMENTUM TO THE MARCH
im sure all that have been apart of this before can see how well it has worked out for us in the past.
so yea there you have it, if anyone is willing to help let us know.. or not, either way try to come to a meeting or be at the march to speak your mind with the masses.
thanks a bunch

Bike Ride for Social Change: Hawai`i

RIDE FOR CHANGE!

A BIKE RIDE THROUGH HAWAII’S PAST AND PRESENT

Do you have a passion for social change? Do you want to learn about sustainability and justice directly from the land and the people closest to that land? Do you want to experience hands on education about American society, ecology and human communities? If your answers are yes, then Bike Aid Hawai`i is for you!

Riders will pedal around O`ahu and the Big Island from December 12-22, 2005. We will be staying with host families and organizations along the way and providing service projects as a way of giving back to them. Some of the goals of the ride are:

<sum> To travel by bicycle as a means of promoting sustainable transportation.

<sum> To work with the Kanaka Maoli (native Hawaiians) to help them preserve their identity, cultural history and connection with their homeland.

<sum> To assist the Hawaiian’s we meet in networking with one another and with those on the mainland around common causes by providing a mobile link between them.

<sum> To generate positive press about living sustainably with the earth and about the rights of indigenous peoples.

Bike Aid is a program of Global Exchange, an international human rights organization working to build people to people ties. Participants raise a minimum of $2000 USD in pledges to cover program costs such as donations to families who provide us shelter. (This does not including air fare). All additional funds raised go to support Global Exchange’s Public Education programs.

TO SIGN UP: Visit www.globalexchange.org. Click on Bike Aid; Bike Aid Hawai`i or contact Cori Coccia at 415-215-3151, cori@ecomail.org. Bike Aid is open to cyclists of all ability levels!

Greetings all-

I am starting to get really frustrated with BART bike policy, especially in Oakland. I am interested in organizing a BART critical mass, in which a large number of folks attempt to board a BART train/station during prohibited hours.

Any interest?

Me & my friend, Dave, did the ride tonight ... well, a lot of it, if not all of it. We bumped into a good friend down at the Wharf, stopped and talked with him for a while, then rode to the Mission via Polk Street -- where we encountered a lot of other Mass riders who had splintered off, too. Then, when I hit my street (22nd), I encounter ALL of CritMass on Mission Street.

There were sooooo many cool, souped-up bikes this time. I especially liked the one that had been made from a bike-friday.

At any rate, that was CM #20 for me.

Just wanted to remind folks that tomorrow March 11th is the 12th Anniversary Berkeley Critical Mass ride.

Gather 5:30pm @ Downtown Berkeley BART. Ride leaves after 6pm. http://berkeleycriticalmass.org

I'll be there with the bike sound system. The ride will most likely end up at the Long Haul infoshop for the party. There's usually really good vegan chocolate cake at berkeley critical mass anniversary parties.

missing the days of destinations and planned routes

One of the things I used to like about CM was the gathering at the end of the ride. Someone would choose an interesting and scenic route, usually without any steep hills and through a residential neighborhood, and after about an hour and a half of scenic riding, we'd end up at some park where people could bring beer and pass around doobies and enjoy each other. These days, the ride meanders around downtown for a really long time, and just kind of goes until it peters out. There are lots of separate social gatherings but no stop place. I'm not complaining, because I still like the ride, and I'm not willing to do the work to plan a route and promote it, just sayin',... that would be great!

Bridge Toll -- Please write to them

BICYCLISTS & PEDESTRIANS ORGANIZE AGAINST NEW TOLL ON GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE:

The idea of charging bicyclists and pedestrians a $1 toll for crossing the Golden Gate Bridge has reared its ugly head again last week. We're counting on your help to show why this is a bad idea for the Bay Area. What kind of message will this send about San Francisco's commitment to promoting sustainable trans-portation? Why should bicyclists and pedestrians, who cause a tiny fraction of the wear-and-tear on the Bridge compared to autos, be charged a user fee? What kind of precedent will this set on bridges throughout the country?

We're asking members to write letters this week to the Board of Directors of the GG Bridge, Highway & Transportation District at
mailto: bridgecomments@goldengate.org (Please keep your letters respectful, because the angry screeds just harden our non-supporters' resolve.) For more background, read last week's Chronicle article, which quotes SFBC Executive Director & member of the GG Bridge Board, Leah Shahum:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/02/11/BAG6CB978V1.

The following info lifted from the most recent SFBC e-letter
###

Governor Schwarzenegger's administration is expected to announce a plan this week about how to proceed with the replacement Bay Bridge East Span, which is slated to include a new bicycle/ pedestrian pathway between Oakland and Yerba Buena Island. As you probably know, there has been a concerted effort to cut the cost of this massive project that has gone well over budget, and it is anyone's guess how the plan will be altered, if at all. For more information, download the SFBC's Oct/Nov edition of the TUBE TIMES, which features a cover story filled with details about this important regional issue:
http://www.sfbike.org/?tubetimes

TAKE ACTION!

Thanks to everyone who sent in a fax blast to Gov. Schwarzenegger's office from our website last week. We're now asking people to CALL his office directly, and ask that they preserve the bike/ped/maintainace path from the old plan in the soon-to-be-announced new Bay Bridge plan: 916-445-2841 It's best to call during business hours, M-F, between 9am and 5pm.

I got this yesterday from the SFBC. Sending this out to all of y'all, asking you to consider writing an email to your supe ...

###
3) UPDATE on GG PARK ROAD WIDENING - w/ ACTION ITEMS

The plan to widen Martin Luther King Dr. in Golden Gate Park to 4 lanes (without
bike lanes), opposed by the Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee, the Bay
Guardian, Supervisor-elect Ross Mirkarimi, the Alliance for Golden Gate Park and
the SFBC, is scheduled to be approved at the Recreation and Park Commission
Meeting to be held Monday, November 29th. However, the Board of Supervisors
have taken a keen interest in this issue, and we need to encourage them to
translate this into action that will protect our Park.

SFBC members have generated a record 600 individual faxes and letters to the
Recreation and Park Commission since last week, and a successful protest was
held on Saturday at the 9th Avenue entrance to the Park. But we need to do more
to ensure that this plan gets reconsidered before it's too late.

Here are some NEW ACTIONS you can take to DEFEND OUR PARK:

---> ATTEND SPUR's brown bag lunch tomorrow, Tuesday Nov. 23rd, 312 Sutter 5th
Floor where Mike Ellzey, Director of the Concourse Authority and others will
undoubtedly be touting the multi-modal benefits of their activities in the Park.
Cost: $5 for non-SPUR members

---> ATTEND the Board of Supervisors' Special Hearing at the Finance and Audits
Committee this Wednesday, Nov. 24th at 1pm in Room 263. Ask Supervisors
Ammiano, Daly, and Peskin to halt the plans to widen MLK Dr, remove the illegal
second garage entrance in the Park, and approve a circulation plan for the
Concourse that prohibits cross-park vehicle traffic.

---> WRITE A BRIEF E-MAIL, send a letter, or call your district Supervisor and
ask them to halt the plans to widen MLK Dr, remove the illegal second garage
entrance in the Park, and approve a circulation plan for the Concourse that
prohibits cross-park vehicle traffic.
Click on http://www.sfbike.org/leaders for contact info for your Supervisor.

---> WRITE A LETTER TO THE CHRONICLE in response to Ken Garcia's misleading and
misinformed op-ed today. Read his piece here:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2004/11/22/EDGD99EOUP1.DTL

Need Help with Locked Down Bike! URGENT

My Kryptonite froze up on me and I am desperately looking for someone with a grinder to help me cut off the lock.

I have receipt for the bike and the lock and can verify my ownership.

It's a shitty old bike anyway, bought used from Pedal Revolution - I'm just trying to save the $70 necessary for a locksmith to come out and cut off the chain.

I can trade amateur massage and digital production skills - get photos off camera and cropped, websites, digital audio, whatever. I can send portfolio if there is serious interest.

Meanwhile my bike is rotting away on a tree and will probably be stripped down to nothing by sunday.

please help! i need my bike to get to work and to buy groceries.

from the bike tribe -

FYI,

hi all,
not sure if you've been seeing the emails flying around about this
(see our member email item going out today, below). I thought it was
a hoax myself, but I've now seen several people do this, and it's a
REAL problem.

We're talking w/ the police and media about it. I can let you know
more if you're interested, as things develop. It's really bad, ugh,
one more thing to deal with.

You may be getting calls on this at Bike Hotline, so......

leah

WARNING TO SAFEGUARD YOUR BIKE -- MAJOR SECURITY GLITCH FOUND IN
POPULAR U-LOCKS!!!
>The SFBC has just learned that Kryptonite and many other major
>U-lock brands have been found to have a glitch that allows anyone
>using basic household items to easily open these locks in seconds.
>We want to let our members know right away that it may be unsafe to
>leave your bikes outside locked with a regular U-lock, so please
>take extra precautions (see below) and spread the word to your
>biking friends.
>
>It appears that any bicycle locked with a U-lock may be in danger of
>being stolen, given that the information about how to easily open
>these locks has spread all over the internet, and we are already
>getting calls from the media. We advise bicyclists to keep their
>bikes with them at all times, or to utilize the free attended bike
>parking at the Embarcadero Bikestation within the Embarcadero BART/
>Muni station. Building managers who currently ban bikes in their
>buildings should be urged to relax this ban, at least until lock
>manufacturers address this fatal flaw.
>
>We have been receiving increasing reports of bike thefts in recent
>months, and it's unclear whether this is related to the glitch
>discovered in U-locks. Regardless, the SFBC is pushing the SF Police
>Department to ramp up their attention to the issue of bike thefts,
>expand their sting operations, and to develop a better system for
>tracking serial numbers so that stolen bikes can be returned to
>their owners. If you haven't already done so, this is an important
>reminder to do two crucial things that may make your bike
>recoverable if stolen: first, record the serial number of your
>bikes, and, second, take photos of your bikes. Keep these materials
>in a safe place, in the unfortunate event that you may need them.

Now we need volunteer help to get the word out to unsuspecting
bicyclists about this unfortunate problem. Can you spend an hour or
so this week or next week helping the SFBC hand out flyers and our
"Freezer Registration Form" (for recording bike info.) alerting
fellow riders along key bike routes? We particularly need help during
morning and afternoon rush hours, but any time of day would be
appreciated. We have the materials, we just need some helping hands.
Contact Josh Hart at josh@sfbike.org to help out.

To find out more from Kryptonite (which is not the only brand w/ the
problem, but seems to be the largest), contact their customer service
department at 1-800-SAY-LOCK. The Kryptonite company, who was
apparently just informed about this 48 hours ago, is expected to be
releasing a statement with more information. We'll keep you posted as
we find out more.

On Critical Mass

I am not interested in starting a flame war and I don't say things just to hear myself talk, but I thought i'd give this board some insight regarding what the majority of "cyclists" I know think about the movement that is Critical Mass.

First, I think that all cyclists agree that calling attention to the rights of cyclists is important and that safer streets are what matters in the end. I still fail to understand, however, how Critical Mass has brought any understanding to this problem. Thus far, it has brought nothing but years of bad press and even angrier motorists to roads upon which I ride and train for thousands upon thousands of miles each year.

CM in San Francisco passes right below my window on the last Friday of every month and I cringe when I see a group that is suppose to be supporting "bicycle safety" swerving all over the rode without helmets and occasionally crashing each other in the process. The yelling and the taunts don't help either. It's been my opinion that the majority of the CMers are really there for a good time and could care less about safety. If this is the case then fine, but why not get rid of the false pretenses and just call it for what it is - a fun party and nothing else. If anyone thinks that they are swaying public opinion via CM or that they have brought the "angry motorists" over to their side of the fence then they are sadly mistaken.

I have often thought that CM looked like a lot of fun and have even considered participating in the past, but there's no way (in good conscience) that could ever happen.

I've been racing bikes for years and I know the vast majority of the racing community in the Bay Area and to a man/woman they all think that CM has actually harmed rather then helped their cause. Yes, we're the lycra clad dorks who train 7500 miles each year and can ride like the wind.

Anyway, if you believe that CM has made a positive difference then could you present to me just how this is so? I'd be interested to see if there is an argument out there that could convince me that i'm in the wrong.

How does the CM ride work? It begins at a certain spot but who decides where to ride to? I am asking in advance to see if I could catch the crowd after work, as I might not be able to make it to the Plaza by 6. Its once a month so I could get off early but this is a question that I wanted to ask. Peace!

hello everyone. i dont live anywhere near san fransisco, i live in miami florida. we have a critical mass here that just started up pretty recently (i have yet to attend one but i plan on attending on the 30th)
anyways, i am going to san fransisco for a week in june for the biodevastation protest on the 8th. im sure most, if not all, of you will be there. i have no idea what to expect, as ive never been to sf before. i was at the ftaa protest over here in miami and that was my first taste of a real protest. i wont go into the gross abuses of power on the part of the police and the civil liberties that were infringed upon that day as im sure most of you read about or even witnessed them yourself. i hear that protests in sf are handled decently by the cops and that i shouldnt worry about "the miami model of homeland security" coming to sf, but im not sure if i trust my sources. either way ill be in the streets, but i was just hoping an sf native could enlighten me on the subject so i sort of know what to expect.
also, since i live in miami, it was pretty easy for me to find out about events preceeding and leading up to the protest. im a little nervous that that wont be the case in sf, and that i might miss out on some great event or other. i know this tribe is about critical mass so maybe this isnt the proper place to discuss this topic (or maybe it is?) i was looking for a tribe on this subject but i couldnt find one. (maybe ill start one and let everyone know). anyways, if anyone has anything to respond to this, you can post it here or if you want send it to me personally. the_after_hours@msn.com
much love.

The Republican National Convention in New York City

Greetings fellow cyclists,

My name is Jimmy Johnson and I'm biking to New York City from Chicago to protest outside the Republican National Convention. I, like many, many others, am intensely disgusted with the way the present administration has behaved both at home and abroad and for that reason, I'm taking up wheels.

The Plan is to recruit as many fellow cyclists as would like to be a part of this movement and establish meeting points along the way coming from every possible direction, meeting up outside of New York City to make our entrance. The RNC begins on August 29th, 2004 and there is a Critical Mass ride in NYC on August 27th. Planning to get there two days in advance would likely be sufficient leeway in case problems arise plus allow us to bike with the local tribe.

Although the Yahoo group is currently called Biking to New York, I think it's important to invite our brothers and sisters who are on wheels but not on bikes as well. Folks in chairs are welcome to participate as well of course and we will make any accommodations we need to, if any, to encourage people of all abilities and speeds to participate. The only rule I think applicable is that we enter New York City on wheels.

The Yahoo group I just started (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/biketothernc ) and the tribe ( biketothernc.tribe.net ) are left deliberately vague in their wording. I felt this was important for several reasons. One, although I am far, far, far to left wing of the political spectrum, I realize that not everyone shares my beliefs. Two, just as he is most conspicuously not a liberal, George W. Bush is not a conservative either. The guy spends money like a stereotyped "liberal" president would and he has seen fit to further federal control over many things that conservatives have long argued are state issues, not national. For the life of me I can't figure out where this guy gets his support from. The point is that everyone who has a reason to protest the present government is welcome to join the ride.

What we need to establish first are dates and meeting points across the nations. If there is some free webspace available I would like to post a map on it once these points are defined. Furthermore, I would like the group to remain in action after the RNC with local chapters involved in local and national issues. This has the possibility of being and excellent opportunity to establish both political and recreational connections nationwide and regionally. What that means is that we need a good name. A really good name. Any nominations are welcome to be posted in the yahoo group. Thanks for your time and I apologize for the bland, cross-posting.

regards, Jimmy Johnson of Chicago

Any interesting stories?

Oh, and I was with the clump at the beginning who were witnessing the arrest of the drunken bike-rider. Sure, he was drinking and weaving, but the SFPD really should NOT have hand-cuffed him while he was still on his bike. It was kinda weird.
