hi! Sorry for the non-CM topic, but this seems to be the most active SF Bike tribe.
I live near Sunset and Lincoln, and I have a brand spanking new job at upper Fort Mason (right by Bay and Franklin). I have an 8 speed cruiser, and I'm in crappy shape.
I loved riding to my old job at Church and Market. I could always beat the N-Judah, and usually beat the 16ax. Fort Mason seems like it'll be a challenge though, and I was wondering if anyone had any route hints. I was lucky enough to get a guided tour of the wiggle the first time I rode to work at the last job.
Currently I'm thinking of getting into the park, and riding up Arguello into the Presidio. I'd probably have to walk that hill for a while. Then ride down the big hill, and once I'm in the Marina, it's flat - mostly - until upper Fort Mason. On the way home I was thinking of winding over to downtown, and just taking the same route home I did from the old job. I'm not sure how long it would take to bike this... it's a 50 minute Muni ride according to 511.
In theory, I could also bike to Van Ness and Market and take the 47/49. I've never put my bike on a bus. I'm not even sure it would fit... it's a long bike. I'd probably test that on a non-work day.
I'd really rather bike than Muni because I need the exercise, and because it's fun! So any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Unsu...
Well that commute will sure solve your 'crappy shape' problem. I've been in relatively bad shape ever since I moved to the mission and commute to sixth & market.
Get a biking and walking guide and just compare your alternatives and try them all out. I worked at lower fort mason when I lived in the haight, and found the fastest way was to wiggle through the north-of-panhandle neighborhood to Fulton, east on Fulton, L on Divis, R on Ellis (I think, this let me make a L turn on Steiner at a 4-way "stop"--note use of quotes), L on Steiner, all the way to the Marina. You could jog over to Fillmore in Pac Heights, then take Pacific or something east so that you drop down into the Marina closer to your destination at upper fort mason.
Coming home ... eek! The Presidio hill is easier than the Arguello hill so consider that. Since you're going all the way to Sunset though you might consider riding all the way out to near the GG Bridge and down Lincoln to 25th (non bike route, but may have bike lanes in the future) or 23rd (bike route, nice calm street).
Finally, for the best discussion the old-fashioned email discussion list sponsored by the SF Bicycle Coalition would net you several responses.
