I've got a Red Cross class that ends at 6 tomorrow, so I think I'll swing by CM for my first ride! I don't know how far I'll make it, but I'll be there. Maybe it will be a slow and easy and flat route! Yeah!

I'll be on my Electra Townie and I have a ladybug bell and baskets and blue light up reflectors because you can never have enough of those.

  • So, Crayon -- what did ya think? Was it fun?
    • oh my gosh - It was the best ride of my life! I had a blast!

I was definitely worried - I had never ridden in a group before, and I was concerned I wouldn't be able to ride up hills or back home. The slow riding made the ride fun, and yeah, the people falling were scary (all the ones I saw were okay). I was worried I'd bump into people, but I didn't!

And we ended up fairly close to my home - well I did, when the ride turned on Stanyan and then back onto Haight, I went into the park and home to the Sunset.

I felt really powerful and happy and I whooped all the way home, ringing my bell. Being in the tunnel, and riding by everyone, and being with everyone - and everyone was so nice.

I'm going to try to be there next month. It was just the perfect evening. My butt still hurts and I'm still happy. :)
      • Unsu...

        Were you at Mass Trouble?
        I looked for you!
        • I'll be there in September too! Then I'm out of town for a while.

I hope to have 'No on H' stuff plastered around my bike by then.
          • hahah I was one of those "people crashing": I went really fast through the broadway tunnel, and at the end I didn't realize I just rode over some oil when I put on the breaks. As soon as I put on my front break my bike went out beneath me and luckily I was able to jump off.
      • My virgin CM ride wasn't the same ride as yours; mine was during the Halloween CM in support of the striking hotel workers. It defies words, even to this day. :)

(And I'm still shocked I made it up the hills we rode that night. Something about the crowd energy made those steep grades feel like molehills. Whee!)

Glad to hear you had just as an empowering deviriginization as I did. Hurrah for girls riding in CM!
        • Wendee -- I was in rehearsal, so I couldn't go riding on Friday.

Crayon -- how GREAT to read that story and to remember the first time I went on a CM. You brought back great memories -- and you gave me my first smile of the day.
  • Riding in a group really makes it easier to go on huge rides, bike up hill, etc. The slow pace helps :)

I made it to the July CM. At 8:00 PM we were at Castro & Market, and we had travelled 15 Miles! There were still a couple of 10-year-old kids with us! How's that for amazing.

I remember one CM back in 2002 -- I left work at 4:00 and hopped on my Bicycle. I joined the Mass around 6:00, and we biked all around the City and ended up at Ocean Beach around 10:00 PM. A bunch of us Biked all the way back to Bart, and hopped on a train at Midnight. 8 hours of riding, with only a few breaks in between-- it was sooo fun!
  • I saw people wearing little cloth squares with printed stuff on them - anti-war stuff I think.

I want to make something like that! Anyone know how those were done? Do I just need ink and cloth and make a rubber stamp?
    • You mean similar to the main pic of this tribe's gallery? There are all kinds of little symbols you see on squares of fabric that people affix to their jackets with safety pins. I would imagine you could stencil one or do the artwork by hand. Mendel's sells inkpens specifically for fabric.
