I attended the community forum last night for all the Western Mission bike lane improvements/additions. If there are folks on this tribe who are curious about that sort of stuff, let me know here and I'll catch you up.
Basically, we're talking about the 17th Street riding situation as well as the Cesar Chavez route.

Re: Bike Lanes
04/29I'll probably write several posts here, since I'm at work and can't keep one long thread going ... plus, it'll make it easier for responses to any potential questions ...
Part I ... 17th Street. Yup, it looks like the Bike Lane for east/west travel is going ahead on 17th. We're NOT looking at a "Valencia Street" type lane -- much smaller -- 5' wide in most areas. We would be riding next to the parked cars and there's a chance that the brunt of our bike lane wouldn't be sanctioned as a "traditional" bike lane, but as an "arrowed" share-the-road lane.
The problem with 17th is from Harrison to Potrero, where a bike lane may be iffy.
After Potrero, to Kansas, we would resume getting a bike lane, again possibly arrowed. After Kansas, we need to "jog" over to 16th where the existing bike lane is in place.
There was also discussion about making a legitimate WIDER bike lane going in one direction on 17th with its partner WIDER bike lane going up the other direction on 16th.
None of these plans are set-in-stone and public comment is being solicited as we speak. Definitely go to the sfbike.org site to submit your comments.
