Was more than a little disgusted by the ride last Friday. Whose bright idea was it to ride over the sidewalk at the Powell St. cable car turnaround, and then proceed up into the quagmire of pedestrian mass around Union Square?
I do not care for crowds, and having to walk my bike through the teeming mob of consumers in the fashion district is profoundly uninteresting, imho. I took my ride elsewhere...fast.

Re: Stupid ass ride
11/29Happy I missed it. I was in bed sick...ugh! I was thinking how CM and holiday shoppers would mix.
Riding on the sidewalk? Sounds bad.

11/29Yeah, I had a funny feeling that I shouldn't be there that day, so I didn't bother getting work off... guess I was right =/ -

Re: Stupid ass ride
11/30I have done a lot of things at Mass. That one was a first. It was a clusterfuck but it turn out ok in the end. yeah navigating union square took up about 25 minutes but it was all good after that. CM isnt for the fickle...

Re: Stupid ass ride
12/04I like the fun of riding with Critical Mass. obviously for many there is a political side too. Riding on the Biggist shopping days of the year, also "buy nothing day" is going to involve cruzing through Union Square. But i have never seen something block up Critical Mass as much as all those pedestrains did. It was funny to see the ride get a taste of its own medicine. -

Re: Stupid ass ride
12/04Hi all, I just joined...
I really hate it when Mass does stupid shit like ride on the sidewalk. I usually peel off when I start to feel embarrassed to be a part of the group. I though it was bad enough that we (again!) rode straight up Market, but then onto the sidewalk! That was when I left. I had hoped that more people would think that way and not go. I guess it didn't occur to me at the time to try and lead away from Powell from the middle. Also, this is purely speculation but I wonder if there was a contingent of thought that considered breaking the sanctity of the pedestrian zone OK because it was assumed that all the people on the sidewalk were just consumers and so deserved violation. -

Re: Stupid ass ride
12/04I would think that, if CM is partly about protesting car dominance, we should be respecting, encouraging, & applauding pedestrians.
To me, a remark like "CM isnt for the fickle" (in one of the posts above) implies that we should blindly follow without questioning... which is no different from those who feel you're unpatriotic if you question the government.
I'm with Roam; there are times when it's best just to disassociate.... but at other times, CM can be great.

indeed.
also, antagonizing MUNI seems counterproductive. I am bemused by the CMers who indiscriminately foul up buses & light rail. public transportation is a great alternative to driving. I'd venture to guess that passengers on MUNI are already partial to cars, so why make them anti bicycle?

Re: Stupid ass ride
12/05Hi, (from a PDX transplant to SF)
I didn't know that random sidewalk riding was such a big deal. I am kind of spontaneous and I tend to go wherever the good energy guides me. For me mass is all about community, the lack of rules and the promotion of the beautiful machine known to many as la bicicleta. Do other massers really despise occasional sidewalk hoppers?
As far as the "shopping central" standstill goes, I agree that twice is a little much. But I liked how the shoppers were cheering for people who were mocking them via money themed music.

Re: Stupid ass ride
12/06That last ride should of been called 'tickle my ass', instead of critical mass... -

Re: Stupid ass ride
12/06I didn't go on the ride but I didn't miss it, especially now that I see it terrorized a bunch of pedestrian tourists. OK, overly strong language, but still. I wish the ride would get away from the transit corridor of Market St more quickly, do a quick tour through downtown then get into the neighborhoods, where we're still a novelty and highly beloved.

Re: Stupid ass ride
12/06One of my favorite CMs was the one that eventually went into Bernal Heights -- It was obvious from the neighbors' reactions that bicycling was a total novelty to them, as well as shocking to see in such a large conglomo. As much as I love it when CM fucks up car traffic, I think there is also a pro-active side that reminds people how easy bicycling can be. -

Re: Stupid ass ride
01/08Yeah, I'll try...
I think that response was to the posting above his, referring to CM making it's way into other districts, and perhaps opening those resident's eyes to alternative possibilities of locomotion.
The posting in broken english seemed to imply that the previous poster lacked a comprehensive understanding of the socioeconomic attitudes of those in affluent neighborhoods, and inferred that rather than opening those residents' eyes to something different; residents in those districts would likely only view CM as a nuisance, instead of something dynamic.

Re: Stupid ass ride
01/11Um ...
a) Bernal Heights is a working class neighborhood. Or at least used to be.
b) I'm working class.
c) I was the party that posted above his.
If that was a comment based on what I wrote, it's completely inappropriate.
