How does the CM ride work? It begins at a certain spot but who decides where to ride to? I am asking in advance to see if I could catch the crowd after work, as I might not be able to make it to the Plaza by 6. Its once a month so I could get off early but this is a question that I wanted to ask. Peace!

  • yeah,i cant answer all your questions, but if you bike around and look for the mass, you will usually find it. the official meeting time is 5:30 at justin (pee-wee) herman plaza near the embarcadero. ride doesnt usually start til 6 or a little after.
  • PitPat ... there is often a route that is pre-selected, but isn't announced to anyone ... and even when it is pre-selected, the riders often just ignore it and the ride morphs into something else.

Try to join us by 6 if you can. I've never seen one leave PeeWee Herman Plaza before 6:05.

If all else fails, there's the usual post-ride gathering @ Zeitgeist.
  • If I miss the start of the ride, I usually have a very hard time finding the mass afterwards. There is no usual set route, although we usually dilly-dally in downtown for a while.

Nobody really decides what the route will be. Sometimes people try, but it's like herding cats... fast cats with wheels and a rebellious nature. The route is often determined by consensus of the people in the front, sometimes some ambitious individuals hand out flyers with a route map.
    • There ARE occasionally maps, Flarg. And, sometimes (although rarely) we do follow the route. The one where we went to the Palace of Fine Arts was a pre-selected route.

Curious where other people tend to ride. I tend to stay near the man on the recumbent bike who has the boombox playing Frank Sinatra. Where are y'all?
      • It really depends on my mood and if I'm in shape or not.

Sometimes I'll be in front, sometimes I'm near the music man (he makes it easy to stick together).

Parents with children sometimes fall behind, so I'll ride with them to provide a buffer between the kids and the cars. I've seen a couple of aggressive drivers try to shove past 10-year-olds and children in Burley's during the ride.

I'll usually cork the cars a couple times during a ride, and it's really hard to get back to where I was before the corking :)
